Eve of War

Our heroes sit astride their lions, the rising sun at their backs, and in a matter of moments decimate the hobgoblin scouting party. Not only do they obliterate their foe without breaking a sweat, but they do so in style, and beneath the awestruck gaze of the guards at the walls of Brindol. A huge cheer goes up as the last hobgoblin dies screaming, and a chant begins: “SAVIOURS! SAVIOURS!”

The party are led into the city as heroes, and the sharper-eared among their number overhear discussions among the soldiers lining the road as to whether the Saviours of Drellin’s Ferry are in fact the Lions of Brindol reborn.

Defence Council

In short order the party are led up to Brindol Keep and Lord Jarmaath’s audience chamber. Waiting for them are the Defence Council: Lord Jarmaath, Lady Verrasa Kaal, Captain Lars Ulverth and Tredora Goldenbrow, high priestess of Pelor, as well as Norro Wiston from Drellin’s Ferry, Captain Helmbreaker of the Shining Axe Company and a mage called Immerstal the Red.

The party are asked to tell of their exploits and profoundly impress the gathering, though they bring grave news; they suspect an assault from the east as well as the west (scouts are sent out at once), and they have intelligence suggesting there is a traitor within the city.

Lady Kaal seems unimpressed. “So these are our noble saviours?” she snarls, as she ushers in a familiar figure. Ezkabel Drood, the bandit leader encountered at Talar, points a finger at Tetsu and says “That’s him! That’s the elf who raped me!”

Tetsu is entirely unpenitent. In the course of a heated debate he lunges at Lady Kaal, convinced she is a traitor, and is only prevented from gutting her by Brick’s swift intervention. The Defence Council are in shock.

Matters are steered once more to the defence of the city, though both Kaal and Goldenbrow look upon the party with deep suspicion now. The party learn that the majority of the populous have been sent east to Dennovar, and that only around 1500 troops remain. Together the Defence Council plan their strategy.

  • The enemy will not be met in the field, but from behind the walls
  • Contingency plans are made for tackling dragon-fire and the possibility of a wall breach
  • It is decided the clerics will use the Cathedral of Pelor as a field hospital
  • Immerstal will provide a telepathic bond between the himself, Jarmaath, Captain Ulverth and the party. Kaal will remain with Immerstal at Brindol Keep.
  • The party will act as an elite skirmisher unit during the battle, responding to Jarmaath’s directions.

The party spend a day learning the layout of the city, meeting defenders and aiding in the preparations. Brick and Thovar realise no-one has considered a river assault, and work hard to defend that route of attack. Tetsu visits Goldenbrow and says he will submit to trial for his actions once the battle is done. Artheon has words with Immerstal the Red.

Then as dusk settles, the horde appears on the western horizon. They approach in their thousands, winged beasts flying overhead. As night falls the war drums begin to pound, and then the western walls are rocked with a terrific impact; huge boulders are being flung by giants.

The party are contacted by Jarmaath, learning that there is a secondary assault on the southern gate. The party race to the defence, finding conscripts cowering behind the walls as enormous boulders slam into the wall. Without a second though Tetsu whips out a rope and grapnel, and hurls himself over the wall into the darkness…

  1. Great session, loved this thing we call ‘thinking’ that we had to do in this scenario.
Since there is nothing on the wall concerning breaks, sessions etc just to let you know I’m working for 2 weeks.
